Wear it Once
Who isn’t guilty of the classic impulse buy? A must-have outfit for an event that you tell yourself ‘Of course I’ll wear it again!’
Good news! The days of buying expensive outfits for a one-off wear are over ladies. Wear it Once is here!
Wear it Once provides a hire service that allows you to wear a designer outfit at a fraction of the retail cost, whether it be for a ball, the races, a wedding or a night out with the girls.
Wear it Once is the brainchild of Bendigo’s Tam Grant. Tam took the leap of faith to start this clever business while on maternity leave with daughter Indi, and with the added pressure of planning a wedding. “I have that type of personality that it’s everything at once,” she said.
Inspired by a love of clothes, Tam discovered online dress hire when deciding to sell or keep an expensive dress of her own. “I googled the dress and it popped up on a rental site and I was like ‘Oh my god, you can rent out dresses, that’s awesome’,” she said.
Tam spoke to her girlfriends about it and considered starting her own dress hire business. “My friends were like, ‘You should just do it, you have a million dresses!’ For as long as I can remember, my girlfriends have always come to me to borrow clothes.”
From that point, Tam went for it, with a plan for her spare lounge room and a vision of a dressing room in mind. “I just thought why not, I’m on maternity leave and we have a spare lounge room,” she said. “So I cleared that, decked it out, bought a heap of dresses and started it. The rest is history.”
So how does it work? It’s simple – pick what garment you would like to hire, book it, wear it and return it. “Our dresses are available to anyone in Australia. Locally you can come in and try them on,” Tam said. “Dry cleaning is included in the price and I don’t charge a bond. I think you need to trust people.”
When choosing what to stock, Tam relies on her own fashion sense and knowledge of what customers like, along with a little advice from friends. “I go to friends for advice, send them photos and ask what they would choose, but mostly it’s what I like and think,” she said.
So what’s next for Tam and Wear it Once? After successfully launching a bridesmaid range recently, working towards offering larger sizes as part of her range is important to her.
“In the future, I would like to go up to size 20/22,” Tam said. “Many women have told me they can’t go into shops in Bendigo with nice dresses as they don’t stock anything to fit them.”
The range currently has dresses from sizes 6 to 16, with a small number of size 18. “Designer dresses for 18 plus are hard to find,” she said.
Wear it Once is approaching its first anniversary, and the business continues to go from strength to strength. “Thanks to my beautiful friends and customers who keep sharing the business and getting it out there, it’s growing,” Tam said. Her big dream is to one day open a shopfront.
As for advice for other women, Tam says if you want to do something, just do it. “I have met some wonderful women doing this,” she said.
